Client/Asset owner: Rio Tinto
Location: Pilbara, WA
Duration: Nov 2011 – May 2012

Scope Australia carried out preliminary designs of rail alignment options for the Koodaideri mine, including identification of infrastructure borrow and water requirements for the purpose of defining a lease corridor.  The study required consideration of integration of the proposed railway options (up to nominally 180km in length) with the existing RTIO rail network and consideration of network efficiencies as result.  Key scope of work elements included:

  • Rail horizontal and vertical geometry
  • Earthworks and drainage design
  • Bridges
  • Track laying
  • Communications and signalling
  • Construction water and borrow sources
  • Construction workforce assessment and associated locating of accommodation facilities
  • Estimating
  • Planning

The focus of this assignment was not only to identify and rationalise all tenable rail options (including network analysis as a number of different corridors were identified that created diversity in the broader rail network), but to develop solutions for all project requirements and constraints for future execution.
