West Pilbara Iron Ore Project (WPIOP)SERVICES USED: Project services, Studies and project management
Client/Asset owner: API JV
Location: Pilbara, WA
Duration: Oct 2011 – ongoing
The WPIOP is one of the largest independently owned undeveloped DSO iron ore projects in Australia and once developed, will be a material contributor to seaborne iron ore supply.
Scope Australia was initially engaged to provide strategic planning, conceptual design, estimating and procurement services for multiple accommodation facilities across the mine, port and rail. The works included design and development of EOI documentation, scope of work and basis of design documentation and development and analysis of the D&C tender submissions.
Subsequently our engagement was extended to encompass Owner’s Engineer responsibilities for the non-process infrastructure works. This included technical review of designs on behalf of the Owner as well as inspection/ compliance checking during manufacture. In Q4 2012, API placed the project on hold.
The WPIOP was reactivated in Q3 2014, whereby Scope Australia has been re-engaged, again in an Owners Engineer capacity. Our remit has been extended to cover the following areas:
- Large scale bulk earthworks (haul roads, bulk mine civils, access roads etc)
- Shuttle rail systems
- Hydrology studies and flood modelling
- Mine NPI (HV workshops, administration facilities etc)
- Fuel facilities
- Accommodation facilities
- Communications systems (microwave systems, in-pit telemetry, wireless mesh systems, VMR etc)
- Estimating, scheduling and risk assessments associated with the above
